Billy Beane, with a net worth of $15 Million, started his career as a baseball player for the New York Mets, deciding to try to play in the major league, instead of going to Standford... This, he will admit, is the only decision he has done based solely on money. He struggled for several seasons on the Mets, Twins and Tigers as a reserve outfielder, and decided not to return as a player in the 1990 season. Instead, he asked the Oakland A's GM to become a reserve scout. He worked his way up to Assistant GM in 1994, and a year later the A's club was told to cut their salary's drastically. Using the now famous sabermetric principle, he managed to make relatively undervalued players compete exceedingly well in the major leagues. This is shown in 2006, where the A's ranked 24th out of 30 in salaries, but had the 5th-best regular season record. Because of his great success using these principles, a book was written in 2003, titled MoneyBall. This book is now made into a movie, where Brad Pitt plays as Billy Beane and Billy was given a pretty fair amount of money to use his likeness to tell his story. He also now makes $500,000 a year with the A's.
William Lamar "Billy" Beane III (born March 29, 1962) is a former Major League Baseball player and the current general manager (GM) and minority owner of the Oakland Athletics. Prior to his front office career, he played for the New York Mets (1984-85), Minnesota Twins (1986-87), Detroit Tigers (1988), and Oakland Athletics (1989). He joined the Athletics' front office as a scout in 1990, and was named GM after the 1997 season.
A first round draft pick, Beane's playing career failed to meet the expectations of the scouts, who projected him as a star. In his front office career, Beane has applied statistical analysis to players, known as sabermetrics, which has led all teams to reconsider how they evaluate players. He is the subject of Michael Lewis' 2003 book on baseball economics, Moneyball, which was made into a 2011 film starring Brad Pitt as Beane.
Beane grew up in Hollywood, Florida and San Diego, California, the child of a career military family. His father, a naval officer, taught him how to pitch. At Mt. Carmel High School (San Diego, California), he excelled at baseball, football, and basketball, but gave up football to avoid an injury that could prematurely end his baseball career. Despite this, Stanford University tried to recruit Beane on a joint baseball-football scholarship as the quarterback who would replace then-sophomore John Elway for the Stanford Cardinal football team.
Because many teams believed Beane would attend Stanford and not sign with a professional team, Beane fell to the 23rd overall pick in the 1980 Major League Baseball (MLB) Draft where he was taken by the New York Mets, who were enamored of Beane's talent. The Mets had three other first round picks that year, allowing them to risk Beane not signing. Beane decided to sign for $125,000 after a trip to visit the Mets clubhouse. Beane notes his decision to sign with the Mets instead of going to Stanford as the "only decision he would ever make in his life about money."
