Born in Ghent, Belgium, Bradley Wiggins began racing bikes when he was in elementary school, and won a Bronze medal at the 2000 Summer Olympics in team pursuit. Four years later, he would make history, becoming the first British athlete to win four medals at a single Olympics in 40 years, when he won a Gold medal, a Silver medal, and a Bronze medal. After spending much of his career focusing on individual pursuit and team pursuit racing, he has begun to focus more of his energy on road racing in recent years. The transition has been slightly rocky, but he has made appreciable headway since 2010. He has won 1 stage at the Giro d'Italia, 2 stages at the Tour de France, stage races at the Criterum de Dauphine, and Tour de Romandie, and he was National Road Race Champion in 2011.

Bradley Marc Wiggins, CBE (born 28 April 1980) is a British professional track and road cyclist, riding for the UCI ProTeam Team Sky. He won the 2012 Tour de France, becoming the first British winner in its 99 year history. He is also the only cyclist to have won both a Grand Tour and a gold medal in Olympic track cycling.
Wiggins's career began in track cycling, where he specialised in the pursuit and madison events, and it gradually moved towards road racing. He has won six cycling World Championships, his first in 2003 and his most recent in 2008. Wiggins won a bronze medal at the 2000 Summer Olympics and three additional medals at the 2004 Summer Olympics, and two golds at the 2008 Summer Olympics. Wiggins' three gold, one silver and two bronze Olympic medals make him the sixth most successful British Olympian, and his total of six medals makes him the most bemedalled British Olympian alongside Steve Redgrave. In road cycling he turned professional in 2002, but his involvement was limited by his track cycling until 2007.
After the 2008 Olympics, Wiggins took a break from the track to focus on the road. Initially viewed as a time trial specialist and a rouleur, Wiggins showed his ability in stage races when he came in fourth at the 2009 Tour de France, then the joint highest placed finish by a British rider in Tour history. In 2010 he was hired as the leader for the new Team Sky, and won the opening stage of the 2010 Giro d'Italia. His first major stage race victory came at the 2011 Criterium du Dauphine. Wiggins finished 3rd in the 2011 Vuelta a Espana, becoming one of three British riders to make the podium in a Grand Tour. Ten days later, Wiggins won the silver medal in the time trial at the 2011 UCI Road World Championships in Copenhagen, Denmark. In 2012, he demonstrated excellent form to win the 2012 Paris-Nice, the 2012 Tour de Romandie, and the 2012 Criterium du Dauphine, before winning the Tour de France.
