David Sainsbury Net Worth: David Sainsbury is a British businessman and politician who has a net worth of $1.1 billion. Born David John Sainsbury on 24 October 1940, he came into riches after he inherited a $38 billion stake (sales) in Sainsbury's, one of the largest supermarket chains in the UK today. Aside from becoming major shareholder, Mr. Sainsbury serves also as Chairman and CEO, positions that he left in 1997 when he was made a life peer and acquired the title Lord David Sainsbury of Turville. In 1998, he was appointed to the government, spending eight years as Minister of Science and Innovation until he resigned in 2006. Nowadays, he sits in the House of Lords as a member of the Labour Party. As a loyal member of the party, he has given $15 million since 2000. However, he has reportedly increased since 2010 when Ed Miliband took the helm. It was Ed's brother, David Miliband that David supported. In addition to the above, he set up the Sainsbury Management Fellowship Society in 1987 with the aim to help engineers from the U.K. become effective C-level executives and corporate leaders. Through the program, he gives $472,000 in MBA scholarships to young, qualified engineers in the UK.
David John Sainsbury, Baron Sainsbury of Turville, FRS (born 24 October 1940), is a British businessman and politician. From 1992 to 1997, he served as the Chairman of Sainsbury's (a supermarket chain established by his great-grandfather John James Sainsbury in 1869). He was made a life peer in 1997, and currently sits in the House of Lords as a member of the Labour Party. He served in the government as the Minister for Science and Innovation from 1998 and 2006.
On 16 October 2011, he was elected the Chancellor of the University of Cambridge.

He is the son of Sir Robert Sainsbury and Lisa van den Bergh. His elder sister was Elizabeth (Elizabeth Clark 19 Jul 1938 ??? 14 Aug 1977) and his younger sisters are Celia and Annabel. He is the nephew of Lord Sainsbury. His cousins are the Conservative peer Lord Sainsbury of Preston Candover, Simon Sainsbury, and former Tory MP Sir Tim Sainsbury. His great-grandparents, John James Sainsbury and Mary Ann Staples, established a grocer's at 173 Drury Lane in 1869 which became the British supermarket chain Sainsbury's.
He attended Eton College before going on to the University of Cambridge, where he earned a degree in History & Psychology at King's College. He then completed an MBA at Columbia Business School in the United States.
He and his wife Susie (a former teacher) have three daughters.
He lives in the Manor of Turville in Turville, Buckinghamshire. The Manor once belonged to the abbey at St Albans, but was seized by the Crown in the Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1547. The manor house has since been rebuilt as Turville Park, a fine stately home in the village.
He was made a life peer as Baron Sainsbury of Turville in the County of Buckinghamshire in 1997, following the Labour Party's election victory.
