Technology entrepreneur Drew Houston has an estimated net worth of $450 Million. Hailed from Acton, Massachusetts, the 28 year old generated his net worth as the founder and CEO of an online storage and back up company, Dropbox. Houston first came up with the idea for his online company when he was a computer science student at Massachusetts of Information and Technology (MIT). Absent-minded Houston kept leaving his USB drive behind at the college dormitory. So his solution was to device something where he could store (and backup) his college work online and access it from any computer, making life a little easier. But it suddenly dawned on Houston that his device can also benefit millions of people worldwide. With his invention, Houston along with fellow MIT graduate and close friend Arash Ferdowsi, founded Dropbox in 2007. Securing $15,000 from start-up funding firm, Y Combinator, Dropbox was officially launched a year later at TechCrunch50, an annual technology conference. Since its official launch, Dropbox has been hailed as one of the most successful start-ups in Silicon Valley. It comes to no surprise that the San Francisco-based company is so successful, as it has rapidly gained popularity worldwide especially in United Kingdom, Germany and United States. Currently, there are over 45 million people taking advantage of Houston's service. Users of Dropbox can store documents, photos and even videos and share or access them easily. In its first year, Dropbox made roughly $30 million- but this year (2011) the company's revenue is expected to rise to $100 million. The online storage and backup service was well received by the technology sector as Houston was voted the best young tech entrepreneur by Business Week and was named among the top 30 entrepreneurs under 30 by inc.com. So far, DropBox is Y-Combinator's most successful investment. Before Dropbox, Houston was involved in countless start-up projects, including Bit9, Accolade and Hubspot.
Andrew W. "Drew" Houston is an American internet entrepreneur and is best known for being the founder and CEO of Dropbox, an online backup and storage service. According to Forbes magazine, he has a net worth of $400 million US dollars.
Drew Houston was born in Acton, Massachusetts in 1983. He attended Acton-Boxborough Regional High School in the 1990s. He later graduated in Computer Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he was a member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity. It was there that he met Arash Ferdowsi who would later go on to be co-founder and CTO of Dropbox.
Before working on Dropbox, Drew Houston worked on a number of other startups which include Bit9, Accolade and Hubspot.
Drew Houston reportedly conceived the idea for Dropbox after repeatedly forgetting his USB drive while he was a student at MIT. He says that existing services at the time "suffered problems with Internet latency, large files, bugs, or just made me think too much." He began making something for himself, but then realized that it could benefit others with the same problem. Drew Houston founded Dropbox, Inc. in 2007, and shortly thereafter secured seed funding from Y Combinator. Dropbox officially launched at 2008's TechCrunch50, an annual technology conference.
