Edir Macedo Net Worth: Edir Macedo is a Brazilian religious leader and prominent media baron who has a net worth of $1.1 billion. New to the billionaire circles, Edir Macedo is the Chairman and Owner of Brazil's second largest television network Rede Record. Raised as Catholic, Macedo converted to a Pentecostal by the early 1970s. It was in 1977 that he established his own denomination in Rio de Janeiro, the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God. Over the years, it has evolved into one of the largest and at the same time most controversial religions in Brazil. Pentecostal is a renewal movement within Christianity that follows the "prosperity theology", i.e., supporters of the sect believe that faith and commitment to a church are rewarded with wealth. However, the majority of Macedo's fortune comes from his ownership of Rede Record, which he purchased in 1990 from fellow billionaire Silvio Santos. Many assume that he used church funds to make the acquisition. But that's not all as he also owns W67CI, a Telemundo affiliate based in Atlanta. His 2012 biography, which among other things chronicles the 11 days he spent in jail in 1992 on accusations of charlatanism, topped Brazil's best-seller list for six consecutive weeks.
Edir Macedo Bezerra (born February 18, 1945) is a Brazilian religious leader of strong anti-communist bias, businessman and the chairman and owner of the second-largest television network Rede Record since 1989 with its parent Central Record de Comunica????o who also founded after he bought the network. Macedo was raised Catholic, but by 1970 converted to a Pentecostal. He founded with others the "Neo-Pentecostal" Universal Church of the Kingdom of God in Rio de Janeiro state, Brazil in 1977.
His rapidly growing religious movement and his teaching of the prosperity theology have been a source of controversy. His views about other faiths, particularly Catholicism, are also controversial. In 1992, he spent eleven days in jail on accusations of charlatanism. There were several protests, with his religious followers camping in front of the place he was held (a police precinct) as he confirms it in his autobiography "Nothing to Lose".
According to Forbes and Business Week he is continuously involved in scandals, mostly due to allegations that the UCKG illegally channelled donations of billions of US dollars intended for charity overseas, then returned the money to Brazil where, according to S??o Paulo's public prosecutor, there was evidence that it was used in the personal interests of the church leaders, including Macedo, being accused. There have also been official charges of fraud and money laundering. As of January 2013[update] Macedo was still under prosecution by US and Venezuelan authorities.
In March 2013 Macedo was on the Forbes billionaires list with a reported US$1.1 billion.

Macedo has earned criticism, especially after the 'kicking of the saint' incident (in which ex-bishop S?(C)rgio Von Helder kicked a Catholic icon in a TV program for which he was imprisoned 2 years after) and his teachings about tithe and offerings, which many say is an exploitation of the followers.
