The late Jack Layton is a Canadian politician as an estimated net worth of $5.5. Being the most successful leader of the New Democratic Party (2003-2011) has contributed to his net worth. Born in Montreal and raised in Hudson, Quebec Layton is the son of Conservative MP Robert Layton. He had his first taste of politics when Layton was elected as student council president in his high school. Layton then attended McGill University where he graduated with an Honours BA in Political Science. During the time of study, he was the Prime Minister of Quebec Youth Parliament. Layton's family moved to Toronto the same year he graduated from McGill. The following year, Layton graduated from York University with a PhD in Political Science. He would later become a professor at Ryerson, York and University of Toronto. Whilst at Ryerson and York, Layton developed strong relationships with prominent figures in Toronto. This led to his first election to Toronto City Council in 1982. He was quickly recognised as one of the most outspoken members of the council and a left-wing leader. He was one of the first to advocate rights for AIDS patents. In 1985, Layton moved to Metropolitan Toronto council and by the 1988 Municipal electrons, he traded places with Dale Ally - Ally moved to Metropolitan and Layton returning to Toronto Council City. In 1991, Layton put himself forward to become the major - but that move was unsuccessful. In 2003, he was elected as leader of NDP. Layton was about to make history. Under his leadership, the party grew in popularity, gaining seats in 2004, 2006 and 2008 electrons. In the May 2011 election, Layton led the NDP to a record number of seats in the House of Commons (103 from 37). Layton was the first NDP leader to become the opposition leader. It goes without saying that Layton was the driving force behind the recent success of the party, making him the most notable political leader in the party's 50 year history. Just months after achieving his biggest triumph, Jack Layton died of cancer on 22 August 2011 at the age of 61.
John Gilbert "Jack" Layton, PC (July 18, 1950 - August 22, 2011) was a Canadian social democratic politician and the Leader of the Official Opposition. He was the leader of the New Democratic Party from 2003 to 2011, and previously sat on Toronto City Council, serving at times during that period as acting mayor and deputy mayor of Toronto. He was the Member of Parliament for the constituency of Toronto-Danforth from 2004 until his death.
The son of a Progressive Conservative cabinet minister, Layton was raised in Hudson, Quebec. He rose to prominence in Toronto municipal politics where he was one of the most prominent left-wing voices on city and Metropolitan Toronto councils, championing many progressive causes. In 1991, he ran for mayor, losing to June Rowlands. Returning to council he rose to become head of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities. In 2003, he was elected head of the NDP on the first ballot of the convention.
Under his leadership, support for the NDP increased in each election. The party's popular vote almost doubled in the 2004 election, which gave the NDP the balance of power in Paul Martin's minority government. In May 2005 the NDP supported the Liberal budget in exchange for major amendments, in what was promoted as Canada's "First NDP budget". In November of that year, Layton voted with other opposition parties to defeat the Liberal government over the findings of the Gomery Commission. The NDP saw further gains in the 2006 and 2008 elections, in which the party elected 29 and 37 MPs, respectively.
In the 2011 election, Layton led the NDP to the most successful result in the party's history, winning 103 seats -- enough to form Canada's Official Opposition. Federal support for Layton and the NDP in the election was unprecedented, especially in the province of Quebec where the party won 59 out of 75 seats.
Layton died on August 22, 2011, aged 61, after suffering from an undisclosed type of cancer. He was survived by his wife of 23
