Metcalfe was born in Carmel Valley, California, the son of Nancy (n'ee DeMaio) and Jeff Metcalfe. His father is of French and Italian descent and his mother is of Italian and Portuguese descent. Metcalfe played in several basketball leagues during his teen years in Waterford, Connecticut and graduated from The Williams School in New London, Connecticut.
After successfully auditioning for the NBC soap opera Passions, he played Miguel Lopez-Fitzgerald, one of five siblings, from the show's debut in July 1999 to July 2004, and November 2004 to January 2005, co-starring with actress Molly Stanton, creating one of Daytime's favorite couple, Charity & Miguel. The pair departed onscreen together in what is referred to a "classic daytime cliffhanger" in July 2004 but Metcafe was soon brought back to the series for a short-stint later that year.
In late 2003 and early 2004, he met the famous model Estefania Santana. After a couple of dates, they became an official couple. The couple are no longer together.
