Jules founded Kroll, Inc. in 1972 and quickly grew it into Wall Street's largest risk consulting and corporate investigations firm. Jules is considered by many insiders to be the inventor of modern corporate investigation. In 2004, Kroll sold his company to consulting firm Marsh & McLennan for $1.9 billion. A year after the 2008 credit crisis, Jules founded two new bond rating and credit risk advisement firms; Kroll Bond Rating Agency (KBRA) and K2 Intelligence. In the wake of failures by companies like S&P and Moody's, KBRA set out to provide investors higher standards and more accurate clarity into the true value of a debt asset. K2 Intelligence specializes in various forms of corporate investigation including asset recovery, corporate due diligence and litigation. Jules B. Kroll was born on May 18, 1941, in Bayside Queens. He attended Cornell for his undergraduate degree then Georgetown law school. His business career started as an Assistant District Attorney in Manhattan where he was exposed to a wide range of corporate corruption. In 1972, Kroll left the DA's office to run his own corruption consultancy business, specializing mainly on printing companies. Some of his earliest clients were Marvel Comics, law firm Skadden Arps and a slew of major investment banks. By the early 80s, Kroll, Inc was the go-to firm for anyone looking to perform due diligence on a person, company or government. In 1991, Kroll and his firm were hired to by the Kuwaiti government to investigate Saddam Hussein's finances. Jules B. Kroll has four children, one of whom is comedian Nick Kroll who has appeared on many shows like The League, Parks and Recreation, and recently began starring in his own Comedy Central series The Kroll Show. Jules' other son Jeremy runs K2 Intelligence.
Jules B. Kroll (born May 18, 1941) invented the modern corporate investigations industry when he founded Kroll, Inc. in 1972. Kroll Inc. was ultimately sold to Marsh & McLennan Companies for $1.9b in 2004. In 2009, Kroll founded two successor firms, Kroll Bond Rating Agency and K2 Intelligence. KBRA is the first independent bond rating agency formed since the credit crisis in 2008. Kroll Bond Rating Agency, a Nationally Recognized Statistical Rating Organization (NRSRO), was established by Jules Kroll to restore trust in credit ratings by establishing new standards for assessing risk and by offering accurate, clear and transparent ratings. K2 Intelligence, run by Kroll's son, Jeremy, continues the family's work in asset recovery, due diligence, litigation support and a broad range of corporate investigations.
Kroll was born in Bayside, Queens. His father ran a printing business that was subject to graft and demands for kickbacks from purchasing agents. Kroll went to college at Cornell University and law school at Georgetown University. At Cornell, he was a member of the Quill and Dagger society. In 1968, he worked for Robert F. Kennedy's presidential campaign in Queens before becoming an Assistant District Attorney in Manhattan. When his father fell ill, Kroll took a leave of absence to run the family business which eventually turned into a three-year odyssey into the bowels of business corruption.
The experience gave Kroll the idea for starting the predecessor firm to Kroll, Inc. where Kroll made agreements with companies that did large quantities of printing. Kroll would keep a percentage of any savings he could find through routing out corruption. A deal with Marvel Comics proved so profitable to both sides that Marvel switched to paying a retainer.
Kroll moved from printing into investigations by hiring former detectives and branching out into banking and warehousing industries. Eventually law firms like Skadden, Arps and investment banks became a major
