This initial success allowed the pair to develop their own company, which they named Microsoft. In 2000, Bill Gates retired from the position of CEO, and Steve Ballmer, a long time employee took over. The early 2000s saw the release of the Xbox, and yet more lawsuits. Since then, the company has begun to shift its focus to the smartphone market, and has recently partnered with Nokia in an effort compete with both Google and Apples smartphone success. Microsoft currently employs 92,000 people.
