Reinold Geiger net worth: Reinold Geiger is a former ski champ and CEO of French cosmetics retailer L'Occitane who has a net worth of $1.3 billion. Geiger started his career in packaging before becoming a chief executive of L'Occitane in 1994. By then, he had already established and developed a company called AMS Packaging SA, which specialized in packaging for the high end perfumes and cosmetics market. However, he decided to leave AMS Packaging entirely in 1990, when he started to invest in companies that were declining, such being the case with L'Occitane. But once he became L'Occitane's CEO, Geiger pushed the company to grow, especially in China and Japan, where its natural Provence-made creams and perfumes become increasingly popular. By 1996, Geiger held most of the L'Occitane's shares, having invested heavily in the company. Ever since, L'Occitane has transformed from a three-shop company to an international empire of 1,500 outlets. For his international development strategy of L'Occitane Group, Geiger was presented with an accolade of "INSEAD entrepreneur of the year'" in 1998. Geiger gained most of his knowledge, at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich, Switzerland, where he graduated with a degree in engineering in 1969 and then at INSEAD in Fontainebleu, France, where he gained a master degree in business administration in 1976.
L'Occitane en Provence is an international retailer of body, face, and home products based in Manosque, France. The company was founded in 1976 by Olivier Baussan with the purpose to create a company that celebrates and preserves the traditions of his native Provence. La??Occitane means a??the woman from Occitaniaa??.
The company aspires to be "the worldwide reference for Mediterranean well-being, with unique body, face, and home products". The company's stated brand values are: "Authenticity and naturalness," "Effectiveness and pleasure," and "Respect and responsibility." In 2010, the company became listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange.
In 1976, 23-year old Olivier Baussan used steam distillation to produce essential oil from wild rosemary and lavender which he sold at open-air markets in his native Provence. La??Occitane was named for the women of Occitania. This area existed during the Middle Ages, spanning southern France, north-eastern Spain and northern Italy. Occitan was the native language and is still spoken as a second language in some areas of this region today.
The first La??Occitane boutique opened in 1978 in Volx, a village in Provence. Baussan found a disused soap factory in Manosque, another ProvenA?al village, which he took over to manufacture vegetable-based soaps using traditional methods. In the 1990s, Baussan sold a majority stake in the business to venture capitalists to finance expansion. As their approaches were incompatible, Baussan found himself excluded from daily management and strategic decision-making.
In 1994, Austrian businessman Reinold Geiger bought a 33% stake in the group. Through a series of capital increases, Geiger became majority shareholder in 1996. Geiger, as the new Chairman, asked Baussan to return as creative director and lead product development. The company's new focus on marketing strategy paved the way for international expansion. In the late 1990s the company changed its name to 'L'Occitane en Provence'
