Rocky Wirtz is a chairman of NHL's Chicago Blackhawks who has a net worth of $500 million. Rocky Wirtz also gained his net worth as president of Wirtz Corporation as well as overseeing a number of commercial companies. Wirtz grew up within the walls of Chicago Blackhawks, as his grandfather, Arthur Wirtz, brought the team in 1954. Over 50 years later, Wirtz became chairman of Chicago Blackhawks following the death of his father in 2007. It is safe to say that he was responsible for the recent success of the team as in 2010 they won the Stanley Cup. In addition to bringing success to Chicago Blackhawks, he served as the co-chairman of the Executive Committee of Chicago's United Centre and is a member of the National Hockey League's Executive Committee. The father of three also manages Wirtz Beverage Group, a leading distributor in premium alcoholic drinks. Named the Wholesaler of the Year by Beverage Industry magazine, Wirtz Beverage Group makes nearly 2 billion a year. He also oversees Wirtz Insurances as well as banking interest at First Security Trust and Savings and First National Bank of South Miami. In the five years since Wirtz took over the leadership roles, he received numerous recognition for many successes for each company. He was awarded the Chicago Innovation Award.
William Rockwell "Rocky" Wirtz (born October 5, 1952) is the principal owner and chairman of the NHL's Chicago Blackhawks. He is also president of the Blackhawks' parent company, Wirtz Corporation, a diversified conglomerate headquartered in Chicago.
Rocky oversees Wirtz Corporation???s commercial and residential real estate companies, wine distributor Wirtz Beverage Group, an insurance company and banks in Illinois and Florida. Wirtz is also the co-chairman of the Executive Committee of the United Center along with Chicago Bulls owner Jerry Reinsdorf.
Wirtz managed the Judge & Dolph, Ltd. liquor distributorship until October 2007. He assumed control of the franchise shortly after the death of his father, William W. Wirtz; and his brother, Peter Wirtz, decided to maintain Bismarck Enterprises in lieu of running the team.
He graduated from Northwestern University in 1975 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Communications.
Almost immediately after becoming the new owner, Rocky Wirtz began altering some longstanding policies implemented by his father, which many fans saw as anachronistic. According to a source within the Hawks organization, Rocky Wirtz "believes in spending money to make money," in marked contrast to his father. Wirtz stated in a brief interview that he would keep Dale Tallon as Blackhawks general manager and Denis Savard as head coach. He also affirmed at the time that Bob Pulford would remain as the team's senior vice president, but later re-assigned him to Blackhawks liaison on NHL affairs. (Savard would be fired as head coach just four games into the 2008-09 season and replaced by Joel Quenneville.)
On October 22, 2007, Rocky announced that the team was in negotiations with Comcast SportsNet Chicago (of which he is part-owner) to begin televising home games.
