Sean Penn is an American actor, director, and activist with a net worth of $120 million. Raised in Los Angeles, Penn made extra and guest-star appearances in television shows as a child, and began acting seriously in the early 1980s. Early on, he became well-known for his performance as stoner Jeff Spicoli in Fast Times at Ridgemont High, and he received critical attention for his roles in Bad Boys, The Falcon and the Snowman, and Carlito's Way. In 1995, he earned his first major awards nominations for death-row inmate Matthew Poncelet in Dead Man Walking. In total, Penn has been nominated five times for the Academy Award for Best Actor, and has won twice, for his performances as Jimmy Markum in 2003's Mystic River and the late San Francisco mayor Harvey Milk in 2008's Milk. Penn has also directed several films, including 2007's Into the Wild, for which he was nominated for several awards. In 1985, Penn married the singer Madonna; they divorced in 1989, and Penn soon began a relationship with actress Robin Wright. The couple had two children, married in 1996, and separated several times before divorcing in 2009. Penn is also known for his political activism-he was a vocal critic of the administration of George W. Bush, and has traveled abroad several times for political and diplomatic reasons, including a 2005 reporting assignment for The San Francisco Chronicle, in which he traveled to Iran.

Penn subsequently received another two Oscar nominations for Sweet and Lowdown (1999) and I Am Sam (2001), before winning his first Academy Award for Best Actor in 2003 for Mystic River and a second one in 2008 for Milk. He has also won a Best Actor Award of the Cannes Film Festival for She's So Lovely (1997), and two Best Actor Awards at the Venice Film Festival for Hurlyburly (1998) and 21 Grams (2003).
