Alred "Weird Al" Yankovic was born October 23, 1959 and is a singer/songwriter, comedian, and music producer with a net worth of $10 million. In 1979, his first song parody aired, and he has since sold over 12 million albums, more than any other comedian in history. He has eared three Grammys, four gold records, and six platinum records. He has also written and starred in his own film, UHF, directed music videos for Ben Folds and Hanson, as well as had his own TV show, The Weird Al Show. Al Yankovic began playing to accordion at age six, and continued lessons for three years. He skipped the second grade, and was labeled a "nerd" early on, taking no interest in social events or sports, and being a straight-A student while graduating high school as valedictorian. In 1979 he recorded "My Bologna," a parody to The Kack's "My Sharona," and Yankovic signed a six-month contract with Capitol Records. Yankovic recorded a live parody to Queen's "Another One Bites the Dust," on the Dr. Demento radio show in 1980 with Jon "Bermuda" Schwartz playing the drums on an accordion case to add to the comedic effect. Throughout the 1980s Weird Al began touring and recording more songs, as well as co-writing and starring in a "mockumentary" titled "The Compleat Al," revolving around his life and comedy. He continued to record and in 2007 released his longest tracks, "Albuquerque" and "Trapped in the Drive-Thru". In 2009 he released "Craigslist" and "Skipper Dan," among others, all which he released through a digital EP titled Internet Leaks. On August 28, 2009, Rolling Stone ranked Weird Al first on a reader poll of "who most deserves to be enshrined in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame."
Alfred Matthew "Weird Al" Yankovic (pronunciation: /'jae?k?v?k/; born October 23, 1959) is an American singer-songwriter, music producer, accordionist, actor, comedian, writer, satirist, and parodist. Yankovic is known for his humorous songs that make light of popular culture and that often parody specific songs by contemporary musical acts. Since his first-aired comedy song in 1976, he has sold more than 12 million albums (as of 2007), recorded more than 150 parody and original songs, and has performed more than 1,000 live shows. His works have earned him three Grammy Awards among nine nominations, four gold records, and six platinum records in the United States. Yankovic's first top ten Billboard album (Straight Outta Lynwood) and single ("White & Nerdy") were both released in 2006, nearly three decades into his career.
Yankovic's success comes in part from his effective use of music video to further parody popular culture, the song's original artist, and the original music videos themselves, scene-for-scene in some cases. He directed later videos himself and went on to direct for other artists including Ben Folds, Hanson, Black Crowes, and The Presidents of the United States of America. In addition to recording his albums, Yankovic wrote and starred in the film, UHF, and television show, The Weird Al Show. He has also made guest appearances on many television shows, in addition to starring in Al TV specials on MTV.
Alfred was born in Downey, California, and raised in the town of Lynwood. He is the only child of Nick Louis Yankovic (June 4, 1917 - April 9, 2004) and Mary Elizabeth (nee Vivalda; February 7, 1923 - April 9, 2004). His father was born in Kansas City, Kansas of Yugoslavian descent, and began living in California after serving during World War II; he believed "the key to success" was "doing for a living whatever makes you happy" and often reminded his son of this philosophy.
