Chinese-native Wu Yajun was one of the six self-made women billionaires to make last year's Forbes list of 100 richest in China. Being the widow of John T. Walton (the second son of Wal-Mart founder Sam Walton), Yajun inherited part of her fortune after John's death in 2005. However, she is not only John T. Walton's widow. Having earned a degree in engineering from Northwestern Polytechnic University in 1984, she served as a journalist and editor at the China Shirong News Agency from 1988 to 1993. In spite of that, Yajun's real success and the status she currently holds came from her engagement in real estate. In 1994, she founded the publicly-traded real estate developer Longfor Properties together with her second husband Mr. Cai, whom she divorced in 2012. Her company has been growing rapidly over the years, expanding from her initial base in Chongqing to major cities like Chengdu, Beijing, Shanghai, Changzhou and Dalian. The couple had controlled 72% of the company's shares until their separation, when Mr. Cai received 40% of the shares. Wu is currently divorced and doesn't have any children.
